Since this Wiki is about open records requests at the state and local level, our first assumption is that you're looking for documents that relate to a state or local agency.

You might want information from:

• a public school district
• a county government
• a city government
• a police department or law enforcement agency
• the executive branch of your state government (the governor's office)
• a state agency (such as your state's Department of Transportation or Department of Tourism or any other state agency that has its own name, budget and offices)

Note: It's possible that you want documents from an agency that that's in a gray area--where you're not sure that the agency is required to produce documents, or the agency doesn't think it is required to comply but you have a different perspective. That subject is covered here.
